Standard-Definition

A set of analog and digital video standards in which frames include 525 or 625 lines and frame rates include 25 and 29.97 frames per second (fps). These standards encompass only interlaced scanning methods. The European analog standard is referred to as PAL with 625 lines at 50 fps. The North American analog standard is referred to as NTSC with 525 lines at 29.97 fps. When referencing digital standards, nomenclature identifies the standard being used: 480i refers to frame sizes and rates matching NTSC while 576i matches PAL.
