Pillarbox

The technique of formatting a non-widescreen picture to fit within a widescreen frame. Pillarboxed video refers to a 16:9 recording that contains a 4:3 image. Such non-widescreen images fill the 16:9 frame vertically, but not horizontally. Black bars therefore appear on both sides of the image. Pillarboxed images can be restored to 4:3 by edge cropping the black side bars.
