Aspect Ratio

The ratio of an image’s width to height. The most common aspect ratios used today in the presentation of video are 4:3 for standard-definition video formats, and 16:9 for high-definition. Wider cinematic aspect ratios are commonly used for feature films. Not all TV sets offer a 'widescreen' option, and viewing a film using a different aspect ratio shows black bars at the top and the bottom of the screen.
