Anamorphic

The technique of formatting a widescreen picture to fit within a non-widescreen frame. Anamorphic video refers to a 4:3 recording containing a horizontally squeezed 16:9 image. Anamorphic images appear distored when displayed on a 4:3 display. Anamorphic images may be restored to 16:9 by a widescreen display or a converter that stretches the image back to its original shape.
